WASH Market-Based Solutions

Creating sustainable, transformative, competitive, and locally owned WASH markets

Mobilizing accessible, efficient, and equitable local WASH markets is foundational to increasing access to safely managed WASH services. Through our work in Kenya, Zambia, Cambodia, and beyond, RTI establishes strategic partnerships with multiple stakeholders in the private and public sectors to build market-based WASH solutions, improve development and delivery of WASH services and products, ensure enabling environment for markets to thrive, and inspire local innovations and engagement to better serve customers.

Market-Based Solutions for WASH – Our Process

We apply a rigorous and holistic approach to achieve financially sustainable, transformative, competitive, and locally owned WASH markets. Through stakeholder-driven and stakeholder-owned assessments of individual consumers, service providers, the enabling environment, the political economy, and other relevant factors, we can understand the system level incentives, barriers, and gaps.

Using the information gathered from the assessments, we work with local partners to co-create and identify interventions that facilitate the development of a robust WASH market. These market-based interventions can include testing and promoting new technologies; piloting new sales approaches or financing mechanisms; training entrepreneurs, producers, and government officials; providing logistical support; advocating for increased public funds; supporting policy reforms and new legislation; and enhancing governance structures and policies. We regularly evaluate our activities so that we can respond to barriers or constraints as they emerge.

Our approach helps ensure poor, vulnerable, and marginalized communities are able to gain access to WASH services and business opportunities, ultimately leading to their improved health and livelihoods.
