Description: Water security is essential for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development. Competing uses of water require adequate mechanisms to ensure efficient, fair and sustainable allocation.
Innovative tools, climate-resilient technologies and ecosystem-based solutions should enhance water availability, quality and accessibility while also reducing water losses and withdrawals. Sound hydrometeorological and socio-economic information and modern decision support systems are needed to enhance sustainable water management for all sectors, informed decision-making, and adaptation according to climate change impact scenarios on water availability, access and quality. Pricing and institutional mechanisms are necessary to guarantee efficient and equitable distribution of water resources and thus need to be considered to inform decision-making.
This session will showcase tools and national and regional experiences from Latin America and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, as well as other developing regions to effectively manage water resources in an integrated, cross-sectoral and equitable way for vulnerable communities, small-scale farmers, governments, and socio-economic sectors as key pillars for resilient water management and Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) security.
