Carbon Capture and Utilization

Designing innovative solutions to reduce costs and energy demand associated with mitigating CO2 emissions

Conventional carbon capture technologies have been unable to economically address the CO2 emissions generated by large, stationary point sources. Our team is exploring CO2 capture and utilization technologies that could dramatically impact the fossil fuel–based power production and industrial sectors.

Drawing on our extensive background in materials and process development, we apply approaches based on solvents, solid sorbents, membranes, and hybrid technologies for pre-and post-combustion CO2 capture in power generation, cement production, petroleum refining, and other areas. We are also developing new concepts for the utilization of CO2 for fuels and chemicals production.

For example, eCO2SolTM, RTI’s non-aqueous solvent for CO2 capture, substantially reduces the specific reboiler duty (SRD) by 30-50% compared to state-of-the-art approaches.  Under a DOE-funded program, the technology has been tested in an industrial pilot plant using flue gas generated by a 250-kW coal burner and will be available for commercial demonstration in 2021.

Our suite of CO2 technologies and capabilities includes:

  • Non-aqueous solvents
  • Solid sorbents
  • Membrane separations
  • CO2 conversion and utilization for fuels and chemicals production
  • Process design, modeling and technoeconomic analysis
  • Scale-up and industrial implementation
