Analyzing industrial process air emissions and control techniques and supporting sound regulatory standards and permitting

Our expertise in air quality draws from decades of work on behalf of the U.S. EPA. We have helped EPA set standards for air pollution control through data gathering and analysis, performance and cost evaluations of control technologies, public comment processing, and technical assistance with regulatory development. As a result of this long-standing collaboration, we offer clients a wealth of expertise on the processes, air emissions, and control technologies that affect several key industry sectors known for potential air pollution problems.

As an independent, global nonprofit institute, we bring this same expertise to international regulatory agencies, regional consortia, and states with similar needs for regulatory development and pollution prevention. We help clients evaluate and develop tools, technologies, and methodologies that enhance information exchange and improve environmental analysis.

Environmental Exposure and Protection

TAC’s Environmental Exposure and Protection Group conducts applied health research focusing on air pollution and environmental exposures, including ambient air, stationary source emissions, indoor air quality, air pollution and personal exposure to particles, biologics, chemicals, light, and other environmental factors. We perform provide research and testing services in the areas of aerosol and bioaerosol physics and chemistry, analytical sciences (microbiology, organic chemistry, etc.), air quality measurements and modeling, and lighting sciences. Furthermore, we conduct research on the human health effects and impacts of aerosolized and other environmental exposures.  We have also developed and commercialized novel technologies including low-cost aerosol sensors, automated exposure testing devices, and spectrum-tunable lighting systems.

Current programs / technology areas

  • Air pollution exposure studies (indoor and outdoor)
  • Sensor development including Micro Personal Exposure Monitor (MicroPEM), Enhanced Children’s MicroPEM (ECM) and Flexible Aerosol Sensor Technology (FAST)
  • Air pollution exposure modeling
  • Integrated air quality measurement networks
  • Air quality management in developing countries
