S. Wayne Mascarella, PhD, received his doctorate under the direction of Dr. Michael T. Crimmins at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while developing total syntheses of triquinane and fenestrane terpenoid natural products via photochemical and organocuprate chemistry. Preceding his graduate research, Dr. Mascarella, as a research associate in the Department of Physiology of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, worked on the synthesis of hemicholinium neurotoxins.
Later, Dr. Mascarella joined the Center for Bio-Organic Studies at the University of New Orleans as a research associate in HPLC, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry methods development and microanalysis. Since joining RTI in 1986, Dr. Mascarella has worked on projects involving the design and synthesis of new enzyme inhibitors and neurotransmitter receptor ligands. Dr. Mascarella has also participated in pioneering the application of computational chemistry and chemoinformatics at RTI.
