In this role, she will lead RTI researchers and senior staff to bring RTI technologies to commercial sectors, with the greatest impact on the industries they will support.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – Karen M. Davis, business group chief information officer and vice president of RTI International’s Research Computing Division, has been elected the new Chair of the Board of Directors (BOD) of NCHICA (North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance, Inc.), a nonprofit consortium dedicated to accelerating the transformation of the U.S. healthcare system through the effective use of information technology, informatics and analytics.  

Transitions can be challenging for nearly everyone, and a return from prison is a particularly complex and vulnerable transitional period. Often referred to by researchers and policymakers as reentry, this is a time of multiple, urgent needs: finding housing and employment, securing physical and behavioral health care, and rejoining families and communities.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an incurable lung disease that causes difficulty breathing and other complications, is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Having reduced lung function increases the risk for COPD. Environmental factors, like smoking and nutrition, can affect lung function—yet these factors don’t affect everyone to the same extent. Research suggests that genetics can make some individuals more vulnerable to environmental factors than others. However, few interactions between specific DNA variants and environmental factors are known.

Preterm birth, when an infant is born within the first 37 weeks of pregnancy, is a pressing public health problem both abroad and in the United States. At birth, preterm infants are not yet fully developed and usually are classified as having low birth weight meaning they weigh less than 5.5 pounds (2500 grams).
