Marine Conservation and Fisheries

What is marine conservation?

Marine conservation involves protecting marine life and habitats and encouraging practices such as sustainable fishing, pollution mitigation, and ensuring the overall health of the marine ecosystem. RTI understands that marine resources present both a critical income-generating opportunity and a resource extraction challenge. Resilient coastal economies hinge on sustainable fisheries management that address both conservation and consumption equally.

Our approach to marine conservation

RTI strengthens the capacity of marine conservation NGOs, local civil society organizations, and government authorities, and those in the fisheries sector in the sustainable management of marine biodiversity and fisheries resources to reduce illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. We conduct organizational capacity assessments of our partner organizations to help them develop feasible and actionable work plans. We enhance the compliance and performance of fisheries and identify private sector engagement opportunities for investment in and adoption of sustainable fishing and fair labor practices.
