Quickly develop defensible hydrologic hazard curves
Understanding hydrologic risk is essential for informed decision making in dam safety and infrastructure planning. But full-scale stochastic flood modeling can require significant time, data, and specialized expertise.
nFlow is a tool for dam safety engineers, chief dam safety officers, hydrology/hydraulics leads, and directors of water resources. Based on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Rainfall Runoff Frequency Tool (RRFT), nFlow gives teams a faster way to develop defensible hydrologic hazard curves. Built as a cloud-based application, nFlow uses precipitation-frequency data, storm templates, and basin models from uploaded Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) files. It then generates flood-frequency outputs tailored to selected locations and metrics.
The result is a practical, streamlined workflow for developing peak inflow-, outflow-, volume-, or stage-frequency curves—without requiring users to rebuild their hydrologic modeling environment from scratch.
nFlow guides users through a step-by-step workflow: define the study area, develop or upload a precipitation-frequency curve, configure sampling, upload a HEC-HMS model, execute stochastic simulations, and review results.
Users can work with the site-specific precipitation-frequency data, or NOAA Atlas 14 inputs. nFlow then samples storm depths, scales user-defined storm templates, runs HEC-HMS simulations in the cloud, and post-processes the results into hydrologic hazard curves.
The platform supports stratified sampling, quantile sampling, and full uncertainty sampling, allowing teams to tailor the level of analysis to the decision at hand.
When to Choose nFlow
nFlow builds on RTI’s deep experience in probabilistic flood hazard analysis. It is designed for teams that need more than a simple statistical extrapolation but may not require the full rigor of an SEFM application as would be required in snowmelt-dominated or regulated basins.
For rainfall-driven basins, screening studies, portfolio prioritization, and early-stage dam safety evaluations, nFlow provides a practical bridge between deterministic HEC-HMS modeling and more advanced probabilistic flood-risk analysis.
The Expertise Behind nFlow Technology
nFlow is based on the real-world probabilistic flood hazard analysis and dam safety experience of RTI and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
