Javan Carter is a bioinformatic scientist at RTI and an expert in phylogenomic, programming languages, genomic ancestry, and genomic bioinformatic tools.

Currently, Dr. Carter supports several projects. As the Informatics Investigator for the Early Check and MPS II project, Dr. Carter works on bioinformatic modifications to existing scripts and code. He is the bioinformatics Co-investigator for the Mast Grant-Estrogen projects – a discovery-based study on thrombosis in women who use hormone-based contraceptives using WGS data and SNP arrays from Illumina. Dr. Carter offers his insights and expertise apart from tracking and analyzing the patient demographic and patient participation growth metrics.

Additionally, Dr. Carter is a bioinformatic scientist for the Opioid Meta-Analysis project. This project focuses on using RNAseq summary statistics and raw RNAseq data from several papers on opioid addiction patients using postmortem prefrontal lobe brain tissue for observing expression level differences to conduct a meta-analyze and a replication analysis. Dr. Carter also serves as a bioinformatic scientist for the Type 1 Diabetes project, calculating the Polygenetic Risk Scores (PRS) and Genetic Risk Score (GRS) in infants based on prior GWAS biomarkers associated with type 1 diabetes using WGS data.

Dr. Carter joined RTI in 2022. Prior, he served as a head microbiologist at Sabra and a bioinformatic analysis at IQVIA. He also has extensive experience in higher academia as the former Vice President of Graduate student, adjunct professor the University of Colorado Boulder, and adjunct professor at Wake Technical Community College. Dr. Carter was a high school teach at Warwick Highschool as well. Because of this love for educating, Dr. Carter is also a Researcher Academy Instructor at RTI for the All of Us database.
