Session Spotlight: Advancing Inflow Forecasting with CIROH and Reclamation
Date & Time: March 18, 1:30 PM – 2:15 PM PDT
Location: Harbor Ballroom H-I
Facilitator: Shaun Carney, RTI International; Chris Frans, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation
A central focus for many utilities is improving inflow forecasting to support reservoir management, power generation, and risk mitigation. While AI-based approaches show promise in enhancing forecast skill, traditional process-based models remain valued for their interpretability and operational familiarity. Hybrid approaches, integrating physical and AI-based models, offer a pathway to combine improved accuracy with trusted decision support.
Join the presentation for a discussion on national efforts to advance forecasting science into operations. The session will cover:
- Innovations under the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH), including AI-driven methods, hybrid modeling frameworks, and dynamic multi-model ensemble weighting
- Reclamation’s benchmarking efforts, open competitions, and advances in snow modeling and data assimilation
- Development of a forecast portal designed to evaluate and test alternative forecasts for reservoirs nationwide
