RTI to support EPA’s endocrine disruptor screening program under new contract

RTI experts will conduct laboratory testing, toxicological and toxicokinetic studies, and more to protect public health

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected RTI as one of the awardees on a contract with a ceiling of $44 million to support its Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP), which screens and tests pesticides and other chemicals to determine their effects on humans and wildlife.

Under the contract, RTI will support laboratory testing; toxicological and toxicokinetic studies; systematic literature reviews and data management. RTI will also conduct in vitro and in vivo assays, evaluate endocrine-related chemical data, develop computational and analytical tools, and provide project management and quality assurance.

“RTI has supported EDSP for decades evaluating environmentally sensitive chemicals and providing critical data to inform environmental policies,” said Ronnie Maitra, Ph.D., senior research pharmacologist and principal investigator of the program at RTI. “RTI brings the scientific expertise needed to support informed decisions that protect the health of Americans.”

In addition to Dr. Maitra, Senior Fellow Dr. Tim Fennell and computational biologist Dr. Shannon Bell are part of the RTI team that will lend their expertise to the program.

Humans and wildlife, including mammals, birds and fish, all have endocrine systems—also known as hormone systems. Chemicals that disrupt these systems can interfere with normal biological functions and contribute to reproductive and developmental effects.

The program is overseen by the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention within the EPA.
