The present invention provides methods and apparatus fordecomposing toxic compounds so that reaction by-products producedthereby are selectively reduced. A method generally comprises:introducing a carrier gas, having a toxic compound entrainedtherein, into a packed-bed of ferroelectric pellets; and polarizingthe pellets to produce a plasma which decomposes the toxiccompound. The pellets are coated with a catalyst selected to reactwith by-products of the decomposition of the toxic compound andthereby produce non-toxic compounds. An apparatus for decomposingtoxic compounds and selectively reducing by-products, according tothe present invention, comprises: a vessel having an internalpassageway therethrough; a packed-bed of pellets coated with atleast one catalyst; means for producing a plasma within thepacked-bed of pellets; and carrier gas flow means in fluidcommunication with the internal passageway for causing a carriergas entrained with toxic compounds to flow through the packed-bedof pellets. The present invention also discloses methods andapparatus wherein a pulsed corona reactor having a catalyst coatingon a portion thereof is utilized to decompose toxic compounds.
