A method for producing elemental sulfur and reduced/oxidizedsulfur compounds from sulfur containing gases. The method comprisesmixing a primary gas stream of sulfur-containing gases with asecondary gas stream to produce a combined gas stream having apreselected stoichiometry and contacting the combined gas streamwith a sorbent/catalyst. The sorbent/catalyst is selected form thegroup consisting of silica, alumina, and other Claus-typecatalysts, sodium/alumina, zinc ferrite, zinc titanate, and othermixed metal oxides, and mixtures thereof.
