RTI International Names Anthony Hickey Distinguished Fellow

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Anthony Hickey, Ph.D., a senior research pharmacologist at RTI International, has been named a distinguished fellow by RTI President Wayne Holden.

With more than 30 years of academic and research experience, Hickey has expert knowledge in the areas of pulmonary biology, aerosol physics, powder dynamics, pharmacokinetics and drug disposition, formulation design and device development.

Throughout his career, Hickey's research has focused on improving understanding of the physiology, pharmacology and immunology of the lungs. He has worked on intranasal and inhaled vaccine development and drug delivery for diseases affecting the respiratory tract, including asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis.

Since joining RTI in 2011, Hickey has conducted research related to pulmonary drug and vaccine delivery for tuberculosis treatment and therapy.

In addition to his position at RTI, Hickey is an adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and founder and president of Cirrus Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

He is also an emeritus professor of molecular pharmaceutics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy and served as the director of graduate studies at the school from 2004 to 2008.

Hickey holds 17 patents and has authored numerous books, book chapters and more than 160 journal articles.

Hickey has received many awards and honors and is an active member of several professional societies and committees, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association for Aerosol Research, and the Society of Toxicology. He is a fellow of the Society of Biology, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Hickey has a doctoral degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Aston in Birmingham, a master's degree in toxicology from the University of Birmingham and a bachelor's degree in biology from Portsmouth Polytechnic.

The RTI Fellow Program was established in August 2001 to provide professional opportunities for exceptionally talented staff committed to science, technology, research and policy analysis in support of RTI's mission to improve the human condition. The program has three levels: fellow, senior fellow and distinguished fellow.
