RTI International named Nicole Barnes vice president of Business Strategy and Communications for its International Development Group

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.— Nicole Barnes has been promoted to vice president of Business Strategy and Communications for the International Development Group at RTI International. 

In her new role, Barnes will lead a team to drive client diversification and growth for RTI’s International Development Group. Her responsibilities include fostering innovative thinking around business development tasks and approaches, expanding RTI’s client base, assessing competitive trends, and communicating the International Development Group’s impactful work worldwide.  

“Nicole has demonstrated excellent leadership and managerial skills throughout her time at RTI,” said Aaron Williams, executive vice president of the International Development Group at RTI. “We look forward to her continued leadership on key initiatives and international business development strategy.” 

Barnes joined RTI in 2003 and most recently served as senior director for Business Strategy and Communications for the International Development Group since 2011. She is an expert in public finance and spent 10 years working overseas, where she consulted on a range of public finance issues. 

Since joining RTI, she continued providing advisory services to several governments and also worked extensively on RTI’s strategic positioning and business development. Barnes has also been at the forefront of numerous cross-institute initiatives and has served in key strategic advisory and partnership roles.

During her career she has held both long and short-term assignments for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Barnes has worked in India, Indonesia, Jordan, Montenegro, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and Uganda. 

Barnes has a master’s degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in global studies from the University of Iowa.
