Blatecky Named RTI International Visiting Fellow

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - Alan Blatecky, former director of the Office of Cyberinfrastructure at the National Science Foundation, has been named an RTI International visiting fellow.

Blatecky will serve as a senior advisor for advanced data technologies and cyberinfrastructure capabilities. He will work to develop and leverage cross-institute assets to explore and address emerging research opportunities, including federal initiatives and programs, as well as helping RTI develop partnerships in these areas.

“Alan’s experience will help us formulate partnering strategies for new business in data science and cybersecurity,” said Craig Hill, Ph.D., unit vice president for Survey, Computing, and Statistical Sciences.  “His distinguished achievements will add considerably to RTI’s impact in the computing and data sciences.”

Throughout his career, Blatecky has focused on establishing, developing, and operating a variety of advanced high performance networking, computing, data, and visualization facilities as well as developing new research programs, initiatives and companies.

Previously, Blatecky was the executive director of research and programs at the San Diego Supercomputing Center, director of advanced networking infrastructure and research, computer information science and engineering at the National Science Foundation, and vice president of information technology and networking at MCNC, a company acquired by RTI in 2004.

He has been deeply involved in the research, development and deployment of cyberinfrastructure and collaborative technologies to support multidisciplinary research and education.  He has also served on many state, national and international networking and computing boards and commissions.

Blatecky earned a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy from Carthage College, a master of arts in liberal studies from Duke University, a master of business from Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, and masters of divinity and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.

The RTI Visiting Fellow Program has three levels: Visiting Fellow, Senior Visiting Fellow, and Distinguished Visiting Fellow. The level of Visiting Fellow will be determined based on the individual’s level of expertise and experience.
