Glossary Term

Prevalence

Prevalence describes the total number of existing cases of a disease or condition within a population at a specific point in time or over a defined period. It reflects how widespread a condition is and helps public health officials understand the overall burden of illness. RTI uses prevalence measures to inform surveillance systems, program planning, and resource allocation.
