Lance Couzens

Lance Couzens is a senior research statistician at RTI International with more than 17 years of experience applying statistical modeling, survey methodology, and advanced analytics to complex data challenges. He specializes in integrating traditional survey statistics with modern machine learning approaches to generate scalable, evidence-based insights for government and research clients. 

Mr. Couzens has extensive experience designing and implementing analytical solutions for large-scale surveys and public data systems, helping improve data quality, efficiency, and accessibility. His work spans statistical inference, variance estimation, and predictive modeling, with a focus on enabling organizations to derive deeper insights from complex datasets. 

He is particularly recognized for supporting organizations as they transition from legacy statistical tools to open-source environments. As founder and leader of RTI’s Open-Source Mentors team, he provides training, code conversion, and technical consulting to help teams build reproducible, scalable workflows using modern tools. 

Before joining RTI, Mr. Couzens served as a mathematical statistician with the U.S. Census Bureau, where he contributed to the development and analysis of federal survey data.
