Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Survey Research | RTI Webinar
Date
Join this webinar from RTI International and the Washington Statistical Society to hear about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in survey research. The event will highlight how agencies can integrate AI into the survey design and analysis process, both now and in the future.
RTI experts Dr. Marcus Berzofsky (moderator), Dr. David Wilson, and Lance Couzens will be joined by Dr. Caro Haensch from the University of Maryland to discuss how AI is being used for common survey activities, such as sample frame construction, imputation, survey estimators, and coding open-ended responses. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the opportunities for AI to enhance the survey process and improve efficiency.
During this webinar, attendees will learn how to:
- Describe key applications of AI in survey research workflows
- Assess the benefits and limitations of AI for survey statistics and research
- Interpret the impacts of AI adoption for future survey practice

Meet the Moderator
Dr. Marcus Berzofsky
Marcus Berzofsky is a senior research statistician and RTI Fellow who has focused on survey sampling and methodology while at RTI International. Currently, Dr. Berzofsky works on studies for the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) as well as several state governments and universities. He is the Principal Investigator on the NCS-X NIBRS Estimation project whose aim is to develop imputation and estimation methods to provide national- and state-level estimates data from the National Incident-Based Report System – the nation’s administrative data source of crimes reported to the police. Additionally, he is Project Direct on the Administration for Community Living’s Small Area Estimation and Geospatial Analysis Project, which aims to produce estimates of services provided to older Americans at lower levels of geography (e.g., state, county) than their surveys currently allow. Furthermore, Dr. Berzofsky works on the Ohio Medicaid Assessment Survey for Ohio State University, which is a general population survey of Ohio residents estimating access to health care and health care needs.
Meet the Presenters
Dr. Caro Haensch
Anna-Carolina (Caro) Haensch is a data scientist and academic researcher at LMU Munich and an assistant research professor at UMD, where she works at the intersection of computational social science, survey methodology, and natural language processing. Her research focuses on large language models as tools for survey data processing, synthetic data generation, and multiple imputation.
Dr. David Wilson
David Wilson is a Senior Director of Statistics at RTI International with more than 26 years of experience in survey sampling, statistical weighting, imputation, nonresponse bias analysis, and statistical disclosure control. He holds a PhD in Statistics from North Carolina State University and a BS in Actuarial Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Wilson has served as Lead Statistician for several major national and international education surveys, including the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), High School and Beyond 2022, the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, and the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS). He also directs RTI's SUDAAN software, a widely used tool for the analysis of complex survey data, and has led disclosure control methodology work for programs such as SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
Lance Couzens
Lance Couzens, a Senior Research Statistician at RTI International, works at the intersection of statistical practice and scientific computing. The creator and maintainer of multiple Python and R packages, he was an early adopter of AI coding tools — and since the shift to agentic AI in late 2025, he has reshaped how he writes code, documents his work, and reviews it with collaborators. His current focus is knowledge sharing: helping colleagues and clients navigate this new technology landscape.
