New climate finance map to pinpoint critical climate-smart investments for the private sector

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – RTI International, a nonprofit research and international development institute, is partnering with ImpactAlpha, a platform that provides news and intelligence on impact investing, sustainable finance and related topics, and Vibrant Data Labs, a social impact data science group, to assist with the development of a new interactive climate finance map that visualizes the landscape of private funding for climate solutions.

The map will synthesize data on private funding for climate in emerging markets. This synthesis will help users – including investors, development finance institutions, foundations and donors – better understand investment flows and patterns, and proactively identify critical investment gaps. The map can also be used to surface areas where capital is needed, to identify opportunities for co-investing and shared learning, and to pinpoint areas in need of funding to drive more equitable solutions.

“We are excited to work with the ImpactAlpha team to build an international finance version of the map to enhance the effectiveness of the international development community in catalyzing private climate investments,” said Nicole Barnes, senior vice president for Sustainable Growth & Resilience at RTI. “We know there are critical gaps in climate finance – such as for adaptation solutions or to benefit marginalized groups like Indigenous Peoples. Our goal is to provide a missing component within the global climate change space to more easily and proactively close those gaps and accelerate the flow of private capital toward climate-smart investments.”

ImpactAlpha recently unveiled a U.S. prototype of the map that provides a big-picture view of the private and philanthropic climate funding landscape in the United States, utilizing data from over 7,000 organizations to understand patterns and themes of climate-related investments. The result allowed a first-of-its-kind view between climate equity-related topics and venture funding.

RTI will work with ImpactAlpha to develop a map that includes international data. The team will identify and integrate international datasets, develop target audiences for the map, and help promote the map once it is ready for pilot use.

“As we develop climate change mitigation strategies, it is important that financial investment tools stay ahead of the curve,” said David Bank, editor and CEO of ImpactAlpha. “With the help of RTI, we can help organizations make equity-based investment decisions that lead to increased climate resilience.”
