CMS Medicare Shared Savings Program receives FedHealthIT Innovation Award for leveraging data science to improve rulemaking

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.— RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, is proud to support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Shared Savings Program, which has been recognized for driving innovation with data science in the 2022 FedHealthIT Innovation Awards.

CMS follows federal rulemaking requirements, including public notice and comment, to refine and amend Medicare Shared Savings Program regulations to better serve the 11 million Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. Using RTI SmartReview, an artificially intelligent data science tool and workflow, the CMS-RTI International team was able to significantly improve the rulemaking process for the Physician Fee Schedule. The tool was able to rapidly identify relevant comments, allowing CMS to review, consider, and respond to approximately 31,000 comments in order to successfully publish the regulation on time.

The FedHealthIT Innovation Awards recognize innovation and results within the technology and consulting community across federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Military Health System, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and CMS. Programs were nominated and selected by peers within the industry.

The awardees of the FedHealthIT Innovation Awards will be honored during the 8th Annual Awards and Networking event on June 7 in Washington, D.C.
