New Book Discusses Industrial Development in Canada’s Oil Sands

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. - A new book discusses the effects of industrial development on Canada’s oil sands, the third largest reserves of developable oil in the world.

Alberta Oil Sands, Energy, Industry and the Environment is a synthesis of the concepts and results of on-going air quality studies. It contains 19 chapters ranging from a global perspective of energy production, measurement methodologies and behavior of various air pollutants during fossil fuel production in a boreal forest ecosystem, towards designing and deploying a multi-disciplinary, proactive, and long-term environmental monitoring system that will also meet regulatory expectations.

Three RTI International researchers, along with Sagar Krupa of the University of Minnesota, co-authored the chapter titled “Measurement of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Epiphytic Lichens for Receptor Modeling in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR):  a pilot study.”

The RTI chapter authors are William B. Studabaker, research chemist; R.K.M. Jayanty,  senior fellow; and James H. Raymer, senior research chemist.

Studabaker has more than 20 years of experience in technical activities spanning organic analytical and bioanalytical method development, laboratory auditing and training, and human exposure research.

Jayanty has more than 40 years of experience in the field of environmental analytical chemistry and is an internationally-recognized leader. His research has yielded advances in complex, multimedia sampling/analysis and method development/evaluation programs.

Raymer has applied trace organic analysis to study human exposures to environmental pollutants and also leads the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Metabolomics Core for the RTI Regional Comprehensive Metabolomics Research Center.

Alberta Oil Sands, Energy, Industry and the Environment is published by Elsevier and is available on leading commercial bookseller websites.
