Shaping the Future: RTI International 2017 Annual Report

At RTI, we look continually toward the future, exploring how research, knowledge, and scientific discovery can make the world a place where people thrive. In 2017, we remained steadfast in our mission to do work that improves lives—work with impact that radiates outward, from individuals and families to communities, cities, and even nations.

As successful as 2017 was, we remain focused on the lessons, challenges, and innovations that will shape our world in the years to come. And we know the research institute of the future may be very different from what it is today: perhaps it will be an institution without walls, in which people are virtually connected and employees are free to unfetter their imaginations and discover new ways to make the world a better place.

“Whatever transpires,” said Wayne Holden, Ph.D., president and CEO of RTI, “I firmly believe that there will always be a need for a research institute that identifies the most critical problems confronting society and uses evidence-based methods to solve them.”

The 2017 RTI Annual Report highlights 29 project stories across business units, program areas, and geographical regions—showcasing what we accomplished together toward vital social and scientific goals, including:

  • Understanding substance abuse, addiction, and treatment
  • Helping people of all ages live healthier lives
  • Understanding and addressing the needs of vulnerable people
  • Advancing global health security
  • Transforming health care
  • Teaching and training the workforce of the future
  • Driving economic growth in developing countries
