RTI Rarity™ recognized with 2022 Disruptive Tech Program Award

The award honors projects that positively disrupt the federal IT market

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — RTI Rarity™, an AI solution of RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, was recently honored as a 2022 Disruptive Tech Program Award Winner by G2Xchange and FedHealthIT.

The Disruptive Tech Awards honor IT programs that take calculated risks to positively disrupt the federal market. Winners were selected by a panel of current and former leaders across the federal IT sector.

RTI Rarity uses an “artificially intelligent” approach to risk adjustment for local social determinants of health (SDoH). Drawing from a national dataset with over 150 small-area measures, the project uses random forest models to understand life expectancy at birth and other health outcomes at the census tract and ZIP code levels across the U.S. The project also produces a composite measure, the Local Social Inequity (LSI) score.

“We are honored to receive this award and continue to be excited about the results and potential of the RTI Rarity project and LSI scores,” said Lisa M. Lines, Ph.D., MPH, a senior health services researcher at RTI, who has directed the RTI Rarity project since its inception in 2019. “Receiving recognition from peers in the federal IT space is particularly gratifying for our team.”

RTI Rarity is part of the institute’s work for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
