Medical Review Officer Certification Council Transitions to 501(c)6 Organization

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — The Medical Review Officer Certification Council (MROCC) will return to their former status of an independent, 501(c)6 organization at the end of March. This change is expected to further position MROCC for continued success providing certification to the medical community that fosters the highest professional standards in forensic sciences.

Founded in 1992, MROCC credentials highly qualified physicians who review and interpret drug test results as medical review officers (MROs). RTI International (RTI) acquired the Chicago-based MROCC in November 2018 to provide expanded forensic science capabilities to the medical community.

“RTI values MROCC’s commitment to MRO professional excellence and its outstanding professional certification programs and rigorous training and review for clients,” said Jeri Ropero-Miller, senior director of RTI's Center for Forensic Sciences at RTI. “We share a joint commitment with MROCC to raise the quality of forensic science through professional training and education and support them in their future endeavors.”

More than 60 percent of large private employers require drug and alcohol testing, and more than 20 million forensic drug test specimens are processed by certified laboratories every year. The results of these laboratory tests are reviewed and interpreted by thousands of highly qualified physicians acting as MROCC-certified MROs.

There will be no change to contacts or processes for the physician applying for MRO accreditation or re-accreditation. MROCC leadership and employees will remain in their Chicago office. The same team will provide the same level of service and valued offerings expected of MROCC.
