Abstract
Infectious diseases like malaria are back in the headlines. Communicable diseases are responsible for 60% of the total disease burden in developing countries. Infectious and parasitic diseases are a matter not only of health, but also of economic development, particularly for the world's lowest-income countries. Prevention and treatment programs are central to breaking the cycle of poor health and poverty for individuals and their communities.
