This study estimates the economic impact of 2Africa, a 37,000 km submarine fiber optic cable system that will interconnect Europe, the Middle East, and 16 countries in Africa expected to become operational in 2023/4. Its design capacity is 180 Tbps, which 2Africa’s partners note will deliver “more than the total combined capacity of all subsea cables serving Africa today”.
This report reviews available evidence about the impacts of subsea cables, our analysis approach, and the economic impacts we quantified.
