The People's Republic of China (PRC) has been experiencing rapid economic and industrial growth with associated increased air pollution. Government officials strive to improve air quality while maintaining growth. Implemented control measures have not achieved air quality goals; therefore, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau turned to air quality models to help identify sources of air pollution and required levels of controls. The resulting Air Quality Management Decision Support System integrates an emissions inventory development application and database; regional, local and source–receptor modelling; and visualisation tools in a software framework to ease model operation.
