Andrea Mohamed Promoted to VP of Strategy, Innovation, Marketing and Communications in RTI’s SSES Business Unit, Wins 2021 ‘Women in Business’ Award

Triangle Business Journal’s ‘Women in Business Award’ program recognizes women leaders in the Triangle region of NC each year

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Andrea Mohamed has been promoted to Vice President of Strategy, Innovation, Marketing and Communications in the Social, Statistical and Environmental Sciences (SSES) business unit at RTI International (RTI), a nonprofit research institute. Mohamed also has been recognized by the Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) as a 2021 Women in Business Award winner, which honors women in the Triangle with proven track records of dynamic leadership and who have made significant contributions to business and their community.

As the new SSES Vice President of Strategy, Innovation, Marketing and Communications, Mohamed is responsible for developing and implementing the business unit growth strategy and overseeing the supporting functions that are used to help drive execution of the strategy. SSES, the largest of RTI’s business units, is comprised of 14 lines of research operations. She reports directly to Tim Gabel, the Executive Vice President of SSES.

“Andrea is a remarkable leader and has been instrumental in accelerating our growth and success in the market,” said Tim Gabel, Executive Vice President of SSES. “She is a strategic thinker who can see around corners, helping our research leaders maximize their impact as we strive toward our mission to Improve the Human Condition.”

Mohamed’s efforts have contributed to over $200 million in funding for opioid-related work by generating over 9,000 marketing leads and various thought leadership opportunities. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Mohamed helped coordinate RTI’s research response to COVID-19 and was responsible for helping to manage the work-from-home status for SSES staff, including coordinating numerous virtual town-hall events to keep SSES employees engaged and informed.

Mohamed also serves as the senior communications advisor and executive sponsor to over 500 members of RTI’s Young Professionals Employee Resource Group, a diverse and inclusive group of employees at RTI regardless of age and career status. She has helped orchestrate more engagement for the group with senior leaders throughout RTI.

Outside of her roles at RTI, Mohamed is actively involved in serving the community. She is a corporate sponsor liaison for the Children’s Inn at NIH, volunteers for Duke’s Fuqua School of Business (her alma mater), is a member of the Alliance of Women in Tech Leadership and serves as a volunteer and member for the North Carolina PTA. Mohamed also donates her time and money to various non-profit organizations.

Mohamed’s TBJ award was nominated within the “Behind the Scenes” category, which spotlights women who are a driving force behind the success of their employer. Individuals receive this award because of their outstanding professional achievements, leadership qualities and contributions to the Triangle community. This year, TBJ reviewed over 200 nominations for the 24th annual award program.
