Sharone Backers is an international development professional with over 10 years’ experience in global health program implementation in Mozambique and Ethiopia. She has experience managing staff in complex environments, including neglected tropical disease and HIV programs, working with mobile and at-risk populations. Ms. Backers currently serve as Chief of Party for USAID’s Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases | East program in Ethiopia, a global flagship initiative to help endemic countries fight neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
Previously, she led both USAID’s ENVISION and Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention projects, providing critical support to Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) in the scale up treatment and care for NTDs. In her current role, Ms. Backers supports the Ethiopian FMOH at both the central and regional levels in building and strengthening health systems; ensures internal integration of project activities through the annual work plan and budgeting process; creates and maintains an effective project-management team; and oversees an effective monitoring and evaluation system.
