Manan Thapar brings broad experience in the power sector to his role at RTI International India. With a practical understanding of the sector’s regulatory and corporate governance issues, he works with leaders in government, funding agencies, and electrical distribution companies (Discoms) to improve performance, strengthen institutions, and plan for long-term viability.
Mr. Thapar’s projects often use surveys to understand consumers’ and utilities’ perspective on potential investments. Currently, Mr. Thapar is assisting a power utility in Northern India with a technical study aimed at reducing losses and improving service to rural areas. He also helps conduct studies of government-sponsored programs, including a review of the socioeconomic impact of investments by 12 distribution utilities in Northern India, and a feasibility study for a program focused on bringing renewable energy to rural areas. In collaboration with Delhi Technical University, he is providing support to a DC-based off-grid system in a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Mr. Thapar joined RTI in 2018. Previously, he worked with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, advising distribution utilities, state generation and transmission companies, and regulators on technical, commercial, financial, technological, policy, and regulatory aspects of the power sector. He was actively involved in developing performance management and monitoring systems. His background also includes work at North Delhi Power Limited, now TPDDL, where he was involved in framing the performance monitoring and management system across departments. He is proficient in English and Hindi.
