Now in its twelfth year, the Cracking the Nut (CTN) conference provides a collaborative learning space for international development practitioners working to sustainably build the world’s rural and agricultural markets. The conference relies on a mix of private- and public-sector participation to identify innovative approaches that address the most pressing challenges in rural and agricultural development and access to finance. CTN 2023 will bring together approximately 300 of the world’s relevant stakeholders to discuss “tough nuts” related to appropriate approaches for blended finance and smart subsidies, including the themes below:
- Reducing risks associated with rural and agricultural investments
- Using subsidies and blending commercial capital to achieve development impacts
- Integrating underserved populations into commercial markets
RTI is pleased to sponsor this year’s CTN conference and to share best practices and lessons learned from the USAID-funded Feed the Future Kenya Crops and Dairy Market Systems (KCDMS) Activity.

Breakout session: How to Build a Successful Portfolio Approach to Blended Finance
KCDMS’s finance interventions have de-risked and expanded the supply of financing for farmers and agribusinesses in Kenya while simultaneously stimulating and expanding their capacity to apply for and receive additional capital. Through this approach, KCDMS facilitated over $42 million in agricultural credit to almost 50,000 farmers and agribusinesses in partnership with 30 financial service providers. The session will feature a presentation from KCDMS and a small group discussion to see how blended finance approaches can be incorporated in other projects.
Presenters: Judy Odongo, Technical Deputy Chief of Party on the KCDMS Activity and Irene Mu, Senior Market Systems and Partnerships Director on the KCDMS Activity.
