Carla Bann, PhD, is an RTI Senior Fellow with more than 25 years of experience in advanced statistical and psychometric analyses with a specialty in longitudinal research studies. Her training in Quantitative Psychology allows her to apply her analytic skills while not losing sight of the people impacted by the research.  As a part of her leadership roles on data coordinating centers, she enjoys collaborating with clinical researchers to effectively design studies, operationalize research questions, conduct data analyses, and disseminate study findings to a wide range of audiences.

Much of Dr. Bann’s current research is focused on improving maternal and child health outcomes. Currently, she is the PI for the NIH HEAL Initiative ACT NOW Outcomes of Babies with Opioid Exposure (OBOE) Study which is investigating the impact of antenatal opioid exposure on infants from birth to two years of age. She is also Alternate PI for the Data Coordinating Center of Neonatal Research Network, a multi-site collaboration among medical centers across the U.S. focused on improving outcomes among infants born at extremely low birth weight.

Additionally, Dr. Bann is the PI of the Darbepoetin Kindergarten Development Study (Darbe-KIDS). It is a longitudinal study of the development and school functioning in a large, multicenter cohort of school-aged children treated with darbepoetin, a medication that treats anemia.

Dr. Bann has developed and validated numerous scales and indices on a wide range of topics, including stigma, health-related communication, knowledge, quality of life, and informed decision making.  Prior to coming to RTI, Dr. Bann’s research focused on evaluation of interventions designed to improve outcomes for individuals living with or at-risk for HIV.

Dr. Bann holds professional memberships at the American Psychological Association, American Statistical Association, and the Society for Research in Children Development.

Get To Know Carla Bann

Dr. Bann shared what drew her to the field of statistics and psychometrics.

In college, I had difficulty selecting a major because I had so many interests. After changing my major more times than I want to confess, I finally decided to double major in math and psychology. It wasn’t until a random conversation with one of my professors that I discovered the field of quantitative psychology which allowed me to combine my two favorite subjects into one, giving me the opportunity to use my math skills to help people.
