As both a global research institute and a leading international development organization, RTI combines our project implementation and technical expertise with those of our partners to co-create smart, shared solutions for a more prosperous, equitable, and resilient world.
For over 30 years, we have collaborated with clients and partners in Ethiopia to advance sustainable, multi-sectoral solutions for the most difficult development challenges. In all that we do, we strive for transformative change built on equity and inclusion.
Our experience and recent project implementation include:
Education in Ethiopia
- Supported the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to develop a nationwide reading and writing program, with the goal of improving the reading and writing skills of children in grades one through eight in both their mother tongue and English, reaching 15 million children in all schools and all regions of Ethiopia.
Energy in Ethiopia
- The Power Africa Empowering East and Central Africa project is helping countries develop their renewable energy sources and scale on- and off-grid energy solutions to fuel inclusive, low-carbon economic growth. It is expected to provide 50 million people access to new or improved electricity generated from cleaner fuel sources.
- The Power Africa Off-Grid Program improved markets and regulatory mechanisms and access to private financing resulted in increases in the total number of off-grid connections and improved development outcomes across 26 countries, including Ethiopia.
- The East Africa Energy Program achieved nearly 5.2 million direct grid connections, catalyzed the generation of 294 MW of clean energy, and supported 111 women in securing fulltime jobs in the energy sector across 10 countries. We facilitated the final agreements between Ethiopia and Kenya to start power trade; addressed performance improvement measures with Ethiopian Electric Utility; and advanced gender equity in the energy sector through internships.
Food Security and Agriculture in Ethiopia
- Under the Feed the Future Ethiopia Transforming Agriculture activity, we partner with local Ethiopian small- and medium-sized businesses to increase access to healthy diets, particularly for women and children, by improving the competitiveness, inclusiveness, and resilience of the country’s food and agriculture system.
- The Poverty Reduced Sustainably in an Environment of Resilient and Vibrant Economy (PReSERVE), led by Food for the Hungry and supported by RTI, is working in the Amhara Region in northern Ethiopia to build resilience, improve access to nutritious foods, increase incomes, and provide income-generating opportunities for women and youth. Our focus is on adaptive management and strengthening agricultural markets.
Health in Ethiopia
- Since 2013, USAID has supported Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health to reach its neglected tropical diseases control and elimination goals, focusing on scaling up mass treatment for lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, and trachoma.
- Led the in-country management of activities in Ethiopia, under the Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention for Blinding Trachoma and Lymphatic Filariasis (MMDP) project. The project strengthened national ownership and capacity to scale up the provision of quality services for the management of morbidity, disability and disfigurement related to trachoma and lymphatic.
- The Global Adult Tobacco Survey standardized surveillance and monitoring processes to measure worldwide tobacco use.
