Dr. Tibebu Alemayehu Weyessa

Dr. Tibebu Alemayehu is a highly accomplished medical doctor and public health specialist with over 30 years of experience, spanning various leadership positions in Ethiopia and globally. Dr. Tibebu holds a medical degree from Addis Ababa University and a Master of Public Health from the Netherlands School of Public Health. He has expertise in infectious diseases, child and maternal health, health systems strengthening, primary health care, and health workforce development. Dr. Tibebu has successfully led strategic initiatives and managed projects across Africa, particularly in Ethiopia.  

In his current role, Dr. Tibebu serves as a Senior Health Systems Strengthening Specialist for USAID's Act to End NTDs Program, providing technical advice and leadership to integrate neglected tropical diseases (NTD) into national health systems. In this role, he provides guidance and technical support to strengthen country ownership and leadership for the delivery of NTD services.

Previously, Dr. Tibebu held the position of Technical Director/Deputy Project Director at EngenderHealth Ethiopia, where he led a family planning program, focusing on policy enhancement and service delivery improvement. Throughout his three decades of experiences, Dr. Tibebu has played a pivotal role in driving global technical leadership in strengthening family planning and maternal and child health programs in primary health care settings, strengthening health systems, creating innovative approaches to health workforce development, and applying creative methods to improve health service delivery. 

Dr. Tibebu has led health programs across 25 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. He has worked with governments, private foundations, bilateral agencies, and philanthropic advisory funds. He approaches his work with an eye towards innovation and commitment to improving health and well-being through people-centered and rights-based approaches. With a commitment to contributing to the global health knowledge base, Dr. Tibebu has authored dozens of peer-reviewed publications. He speaks English, Amharic, and Oromo.
