Abstract

The 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH)1 was implemented using the 50-State multistage cluster design that was introduced in the 1999 survey. The survey was called the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) until 2002. The 50-State design allows the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to provide direct estimates for eight large States and to provide estimates based on small area estimation (SAE) methods for the remaining States and the District of Columbia. Other major changes in the 1999 survey from surveys in previous years included the introduction of computer-assisted interviewing (CAI) methods for both screening households and interviewing selected respondents.
