A method is provided for removal of sulfur gases and recovery ofelemental sulfur from sulfur gas containing supply streams, such assyngas or coal gas, by contacting the supply stream with acatalyst, that is either an activated carbon or an oxide basedcatalyst, and an oxidant, such as sulfur dioxide, in a reactionmedium such as molten sulfur, to convert the sulfur gases in thesupply stream to elemental sulfur, and recovering the elementalsulfur by separation from the reaction medium.
