The article presents the author's suggestions for enduring teacher contract negotiations. Prepare for negotiations by requesting all board members review the current contract to identify any issues that may require modification and assign priority to contract provisions and resist beginning the process with what might be considered the fairest offer. It is recommended to exchange proposals at the initial negotiation meeting, avoid accepting explicit ground rules to guide negotiations, schedule follow-up meetings and set aside time for productive bargaining sessions. The importance of contract language is discussed.
