During the past 15 years, a fundamental understanding of electron capture detection has been gradually developed. This review consolidates and surveys individual research reports into three majors areas-the theoretical basis for electron capture detection, the relationship between molecular structure and sensitivity, and operating parameters. In doing so, the strengths and weaknesses of electron capture detection have hopefully been sorted out and thus areas for further research have been brought into focus.
