Data Security on Field Laptops
Nofziger, J. M., & Pendergraph, R. L. (2007, May). Data Security on Field Laptops. Presented at International Field Directors and Technologies Conference, Santa Monica, CA.
In this era of heightened awareness of data loss, confidentiality breaches, and identity theft, the protection of data in field operations is a prime concern. Federal agencies and their contractors are under particular scrutiny in the form of such legislation as the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and the Privacy Act. With paper forms increasingly being converted to electronic formats to avoid loss, the need for reliable encryption on laptops is of even greater importance.Encryption options vary in user burden, strength, maintenance, cost, and risk. We examine the pros and cons of several methods and their application to the domain of field data collection.
