African NGOs: A plus for democracy and development?
NGOs have the potential to play a positive role in fostering development and democracy in Africa. Donors, foreign and local politicians, and development experts are all currently promoting the use of local NGOs in development initiatives. No one should assume, however, that NGOs will automatically play positive roles since NGOs are not inherently transparent, honest, effective or accountable. For NGOs to fill their potential they must become professional organizations and seek to establish standards of conduct. They must also avoid becoming too dependent on outside donors and should explore ways of increasing their local funding and support.
