F. Ivy Carroll and Mansukh C. Wani honored by RTP Rotary Club

Research Triangle Park—Two long-time RTI International researchers— F. Ivy Carroll, a Distinguished Fellow for Medicinal Chemistry at the Center for Drug Discovery, and Emeritus Scientist Mansukh C. Wani—have been honored today by the Research Triangle Park (RTP) Rotary Club at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center for their outstanding work in drug discovery and medicinal chemistry.

With more than 50 years’ experience in medicinal chemistry, Wani is an internationally recognized leader in natural-products research. In partnership with the late Monroe Wall, he discovered two anti-cancer agents, Taxol® and Camptothecin, recognized as a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society. Wani has also received the National Cancer Institute Award of Recognition, the Paul Ehrlich Magic Bullet Lifetime Achievement Award, and the American Association for Cancer Research’s Bruce F. Cain Memorial Award.

Carroll has had a long and distinguished career at RTI. He helped develop a diagnostic agent for Parkinson's disease, as well as various compounds for the treatment of cocaine and nicotine addictions and central nervous system disorders. In addition, he has published more than 521 peer-reviewed publications, 34 book chapters and 51 patents; has over 20 current patent applications; and was inducted in 2007 into the American Chemical Society Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame. Dr. Carroll also received the 2010 North Carolina Award in Science and the 2012 Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry from the American Chemical Society.
