Lais Lona has 8 years of experience in the energy sector and currently serves as the East Africa Regional Lead for the Power Africa Off-grid Program funded by USAID. The program’s goal is to bring clean power to six million sub-Saharan households and businesses that are otherwise unable to access electricity from their local utilities.
Under the Power Africa Off-grid Program, Mr. Lona provides targeted business technical support to investors/financiers to inform the design of financial solutions, advises governments on developing supportive regulatory frameworks, and provides hands-on support to renewable energy businesses. He also supervises regional teams and project operations in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Prior to joining RTI, Mr. Lona served as the Tanzania Team Lead and Business Development Advisor for the USAID-funded Power Africa Transactions and Reforms Program (PATRP). Before working with Power Africa, Mr. Lona was the Africa Business Lead for SunFunder, one of the leading financial intermediaries in the off-grid solar industry.
Mr. Lonas’ expertise is in off-grid financing and policy, strategic planning, and energy-technology nexus.
