Dr. Joshua M. Wiener’s Legacy: Keep on Marching!

Please join us for a symposium on key issues in long-term care financing, quality and integrated models of care to be held in memory of Joshua Wiener.

Dr. Wiener was one of the most respected researchers and advocates in the field of aging and long-term services and supports research, and the symposium will focus on some of the major issues addressed in his work, including remarks and presentations from Dr. Wiener’s colleagues and those he mentored throughout his extensive career.

"This symposium brings together researchers and policymakers who’ve worked with Josh to talk about what matters now in LTC and to discuss the directions in which to keep moving his agenda forward," said Edie Walsh, one of Dr. Wiener's colleagues in the Aging, Disability, and Long-Term Care program.

Prior to coming to RTI in 2003, Dr. Wiener did policy analysis and research for the Urban Institute, the Brookings Institution, the Health Care Financing Administration, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Congressional Budget Office, the New York State Moreland Act Commission on Nursing Homes and Residential Facilities and the New York City Department of Health. He authored or edited eight books and more than 200 articles and reports on health care for older people, people with disabilities, long-term services and supports, Medicaid, health reform, health care rationing and maternal and child health.

"The field of aging and LTC research would be significantly diminished – and not nearly as advanced – if Josh had not fundamentally shaped it," Edie continued. "He was, as many called him, the Dean of LTC, one of the most respected researchers and advocates in the field. He also went out of his way to support and mentor talented researchers. Josh was a role model and mentor for many in our field. He developed a large cadre of LTC researchers at RTI and elsewhere, providing leadership focused on what mattered, on producing high-quality work and communicating effectively."

Dr. Weiner was a much-loved and respected member of the RTI family. His loss propels us forward, to advance the research and field to which he dedicated so much of his life.
