Media Advisory: Researchers and law enforcement convene in D.C. to discuss policing best practices

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Experts from RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, are joining the American Society of Evidence Based Policing (ASEBP) hybrid conference hosted by American University School of Public Affairs May 23-24. Alongside several experts in the law enforcement field, including United States Capitol’s Chief of Police Tom Manger, 12 RTI panelists will discuss pressing issues such as use of force, domestic violence response, fentanyl, de-escalation, body worn cameras, and recruitment. Media is invited to attend this event with a complimentary pass.

Who: Keynote speakers; Lawrence Sherman and Tom Manger, law enforcement experts and RTI panelists.

RTI Panelists include a variety of experts in disciplines spanning behavioral health, criminal justice, criminology, and sociology. They will present on a wide range of topics such as risk management, 9-11 call alternatives, new survey technology, recruiting, mental health, and drug perceptions among law enforcement. Keynote speakers
Lawrence Sherman is Director, Cambridge Police Executive Programme, Director of Research, Jerry Lee Centre for Experimental Criminology, and Distinguished University Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on crime prevention, evidence-based policing, restorative justice, police practices and experimental criminology. Sherman currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Cambridge Journal of Evidence-Based Policing and as and as Chief Executive of the Cambridge Centre for Evidence-Based Policing.

Tom Manger, is the US Capitol Chief of Police. He was he was Chief of Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, from 2004 to 2019, Police Chief in Fairfax County, Virginia, from 1998 to 2004, President of the Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA), from 2014 to 2018, and Vice President of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) from 2013-2017. He was an invited speaker for Montgomery College’s Civility In Action: Dialogues Across Difference series, where he tackled policing in diverse communities, police accountability, and policing policies toward undocumented communities. He has testified to Congress on changes to the Capitol police force in response to the January 6, 2021 attack.
