RTI Acquires Midwest Research Institute's Cary, NC Operation

Research Triangle Park, NC and Kansas City, MO -- RTI, an independent research institute in North Carolina, will acquire Midwest Research Institute's Cary, NC-based operation. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition adds approximately 20 of MRI's environmental engineering staff to RTI, which already has a staff of more than 2,000 people dedicated to health, medical, environmental, and technology research that improves the human condition.

"This acquisition expands our core capabilities in environmental research, specifically in the area of emission standards," said RTI President Victoria Franchetti Haynes. "We look forward to applying this additional expertise to support understanding and addressing the increasingly critical issues of exposure to harmful substances and human health."

MRI's Cary office assists EPA in developing emissions standards. MRI's headquarters are located in Kansas City, Mo.

RTI currently does work in the area of emission standards, and has created a new center in recognition of the increasing amount of work. David Coy of RTI will become the Director for RTI's new Center for Environmental Engineering within RTI's Environment, Health, and Safety Division. Once the two staffs are combined, this division will consist of nearly 115 people.

"MRI's Cary, North Carolina, office has provided quality research services in the emission standards field for many years," said James L. Spigarelli, President and CEO of MRI (http://www.mriresearch.org/). "We're pleased that this fine group of researchers will be able to continue their significant and important work."

The acquisition will be closed on June 30, 2002. The Cary MRI staff will move to RTI's 800 Park facility on Highway 54 in Research Triangle Park.

RTI is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to conducting research that improves the human condition.
