President and Chief Executive Officer
E. Wayne Holden, PhD, became RTI International's fourth president in 2012. Dr. Holden is a distinguished researcher and clinical psychologist with more than 27 years of professional experience. He joined RTI as executive vice president of Social and Statistical Sciences in 2005, overseeing the organization's largest unit. Prior to joining RTI, he served as vice president, senior vice president and ultimately president of the research company ORC Macro. Before joining ORC Macro in 1998, he had a successful career in academia serving more than 10 years in a variety of roles in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland's School of Medicine, including as director of pediatric psychology and as a tenured associate professor. Since 2006, he has held an appointment as an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Holden is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and has authored more than 130 articles, books, or book chapters on various topics in clinical child/pediatric psychology and health services research. He currently serves on the board of directors for Ziptronix and on the board of advisors for the Emily Krzyzewksi Center and the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. Dr. Holden is also an elected trustee of the Triangle University Center for Advanced Studies, Inc.
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Jim Gibson is executive vice president and chief operating officer, responsible for helping to guide the strategy for RTI's discovery-, science-, and technology-based businesses and also for developing long-range plans and supporting investments for RTI. Gibson joined RTI as chief financial officer in 2000 and has served as executive vice president of the Engineering and Technology Unit since 2009 and as interim leader of Discovery and Analytical Sciences. He began his finance career at Ernst & Ernst in 1976 in New Jersey. In 1980, he joined Hughes Aircraft Company in Southern California holding a number of financial-related positions of increasing responsibility. In 1985, he joined the corporate office of Rockwell International Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he held various executive level positions including assistant corporate controller. Gibson is a licensed attorney with an undergraduate BS degree from State College of New Jersey-Ramapo, an MBA from The University of Southern California, and JD degree from Duquesne University. In addition to his active participation in many professional associations, he is an advisory board member of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and chairman of RTI's annual United Way campaign.
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mike Kaelin is executive vice president and chief financial officer, responsible for managing RTI's corporate financial requirements and institute-level financial risks. In addition, he is responsible for ensuring that our finance, contracts, proposal, and procurement services are delivered effectively and efficiently to support our research operations. Kaelin joined RTI in 2007 as vice president of finance for Social and Statistical Sciences (now Social, Statistical, and Environmental Sciences). In 2009, he was named vice president of Research Group Finance, responsible for the finance teams in all research groups across the institute. Kaelin has 25 years of financial management experience, including his prior tenure as vice president of finance for Raleigh-based Misys Healthcare Inc., a leader in the healthcare information technology industry. At Misys, he led a unit that provided software solutions to the physician community. Kaelin also held a number of senior financial positions in companies such as Channel Master and Productivity Point International, where he was chief financial officer, as well as Coopers & Lybrand. He serves on the boards of Magellan Charter School and Solutions-IES, a women-owned engineering firm in North Carolina. Kaelin is a licensed certified public accountant in North Carolina and holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV.
Executive Vice President, Social, Statistical, and Environmental Sciences
Tim J. Gabel, is the executive vice president of Social, Statistical, and Environmental Sciences (SSES). SSES, the largest of RTI’s business units with annual revenue in excess of $385M and more than 1400 professional staff, conducts a variety of research, development and technical assistance projects in multiple domains. Most of the SSES portfolio involves large-scale data collection and management, with an emphasis on complex methodological, statistical, and epidemiological approaches to important public policy issues in health, environment, education, economics, public policy, and social welfare. Mr. Gabel, a long-term RTI employee with technical training in both statistics and computer science, has served in a variety of leadership roles during his career, including the head of the Research Computing Division and the vice president for Survey and Computing Sciences. Mr. Gabel helped pioneer RTI’s early efforts to conceptualize and develop Internet applications for research activities and has extensive experience directing data collection and data processing activities for scientific research studies. More recently, he led the initiative to develop a comprehensive international expansion strategy for SSES and oversaw the newly created Center for the Advancement of Health IT. He has a BS from the University of Wyoming and an MBA from Duke University.
Executive Vice President, International Development Group
Aaron Williams is executive vice president of the International Development Group. Mr. Williams served as Peace Corps director from 2009 to 2012, and as vice president of international business development for RTI from 2003 to 2009. He has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in public service and the private sector, which began when he served for three years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic. Before his previous tenure at RTI, Williams served as a senior official at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where he reached the rank of career minister in the Senior Foreign Service. His awards include the USAID Distinguished Career Service Award in 1998 and the Presidential Award for Distinguished Service in 1988 and 1992. He has extensive experience in the strategic design and management of assistance programs in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he has served on the advisory board of the Ron Brown Scholar Program, as well as the boards of directors of CARE, the National Peace Corps Association, and the Institute for Sustainable Communities.
Executive Vice President, RTI Health Solutions
Allen Mangel, MD, PhD, is executive vice president of RTI Health Solutions, a business unit of RTI International. After obtaining an MD from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, he did his internship, residency, and fellowship in gastroenterology at Duke University Medical Center. He later joined the faculty at Duke in the department of medicine. In 1995, Mangel joined GlaxoSmithKline and held various posts during his 6 years at the company. He also served as an executive director at Quintiles Inc. and as vice president of research and development at Salix Pharmaceuticals before joining RTI.
Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary
Edward "Eddie" Story was named senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of RTI International in 2008. He also serves as RTI's chief ethics officer and is in charge of the government relations, commercialization, and international security functions. In his previous positions at RTI, he served as assistant general counsel and assistant corporate secretary and had varying levels of responsibility for the contracting and procurement organizations. Before joining RTI in 1990, Story was a private practice attorney in Wilmington, N.C. Story earned a bachelor's degree at Wake Forest University and a juris doctorate from Campbell University School of Law. He is a member of various professional associations, including the Association of Corporate Counsel and the North Carolina and Wake County Bar Associations. In addition, Story was named among Business North Carolina's Legal Elite for 2010 and 2011, a listing of the state's top lawyers in business-related categories by Business North Carolina magazine. Story also serves on the boards of the WakeMed Foundation and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Facilities Services
Martha Roberts was promoted to senior vice president in May 2011. She served for a year as unit VP and chief Human Resources officer, leading the Human Resources team and, as a member of RTI's Executive Leadership Team, advising on HR policies, practices, and daily interactions. Roberts has more than 30 years of experience in a variety of positions at RTI, including more than 20 years managing support staff for research operations and administration. During the past 16 years, she has led a variety of Human Resources programs, efforts, and initiatives. Roberts understands and appreciates that the quality of our people is what drives RTI's business. She is a graduate of Western Carolina University with a BS in social and political science, and received her senior professional human resources certification in 2006.
Chair, Fellow Program, and Distinguished Fellow, Early Childhood Development
Don Bailey, PhD, is internationally known as an expert on young children with disabilities. For 27 years, he was on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a W.R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor and, for 14 years, director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. Dr. Bailey's research addresses early identification and early intervention for children with disabilities, as well as family adaptation to disability. For 20 years, his work has focused on children with fragile X syndrome, the leading inherited cause of intellectual impairment, and their families. He has an extensive record of publications, with more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and books on a wide variety of topics related to early education, early intervention, disability, and family support. In 2006, Dr. Bailey received the Career Research Scientist Award from the Academy on Mental Retardation. From 2006 to 2009, he served as president of the board of directors of the National Fragile X Foundation (www.fragileX.org). Recently, he was appointed to serve a 4-year term on the DHHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children.
