Description

We have been involved in all facets of the U.S. national program to address asbestos, assisting in the preparation of regulations, developing and evaluating analytical methods, conducting proficiency testing of laboratories, and conducting monitoring and occupational health programs.

We have assisted EPA's numerous national asbestos programs for more than 30 years, including

  • Developing test methods for the analysis of asbestos
  • Participating on methods-development committees of professional organizations.
  • Conducting major proficiency testing programs for asbestos testing laboratories to ensure that the quality of analytical data being produced meets the standards of the test methods used.
  • Preparing regulations and guidelines for EPA's National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) program for asbestos
  • Operating EPA's Asbestos Information Service for its duration.

RTI is the foremost provider in the United States of proficiency testing of asbestos analysis laboratories, maintaining a repository of nearly 300 asbestos-containing materials and substitutes. We are well-versed in the development and characterization of standard reference materials (SRMs) and calibration standards. We also conduct research in asbestos qualitative and quantitative analysis issues, as well as applied research on topics ranging from particle aerosolization to filter media performance assessment.
