RTI International's Mary Muth Elected Chair of Agricultural and Applied Economics Association Section

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -– Mary Muth, Ph.D., director of the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Program as RTI International has been elected chair of the Food Safety and Nutrition Section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association.

Muth will serve as chair-elect for one year and then will serve as chair from August 2009 through July 2010. In her position, she will work with members to encourage the analysis of public and private food safety and nutrition strategies with regard to their impacts on consumer and producer behavior, and food quality.
 
She will also facilitate communication about food safety and nutrition research among members, other scientists, and public policy analysts, and contribute to the ongoing development of methods to measure the welfare effects of changes in food quality and public and private food policies.
 
"We're pleased to see Mary’s peers recognize her expertise and experience," said Wayne Holden, Ph.D., executive vice president of Social and Statistical Sciences at RTI. "Her leadership skills and extensive knowledge of the field will greatly benefit the association as well as public policy makers."
 
At RTI, Muth manages projects to analyze the economic impacts of policies and regulations affecting the food and agricultural industries, with particular focus on food safety, nutrition, and food and agricultural marketing.
 
She has presented her work at the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Associations, the American Agricultural Economics Association, International Association for Food Protection, and other conferences.
 
Muth also serves adjunct associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University.
 
She earned a doctorate degree in economics from North Carolina State University, a master's of science degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University, and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural and managerial economics from the University of California at Davis.
