Power Generation: Technologies and Processes
Organic Photovoltaics
Photovoltaic solar cells, which convert sunlight directly into electricity, provide only tiny amount of the world's electricity supply today. The primary limitation is that solar electricity is not cost competitive with other technologies.
To address this limitation, RTI is developing novel photovoltaic technologies that will combine high efficiency with low-cost manufacturing. These technologies include the use of organic semiconductors and inorganic quantum dots that can be used to fabricate solar cells using high-volume printing techniques, rather than more expensive vacuum processing.
